From Texas Tech: Some Quotations on Learning and Teaching
Greetings again. I hope that all is going well.
The end of the week, I went to Lubbock, Texas, to speak at Texas Tech University. How easy it was to go someplace where I didn’t need a visa, where I spoke the local language, and where the time zone was the same!
I was visiting mainly to be the banquet speaker for the Texas Tech chapter of Sigma Xi, an international scientific research society.
The weather was beautiful, and I had time to walk around the Texas Tech campus. On my walk, I enjoyed seeing items from Texas Tech’s highly regarded collection of public art (art designed to be located in public places).
The photo that accompanies this blog post is an example of the public art at Texas Tech. Other examples can be seen at http://www.lubbockarts.org/ttupab.pdf.
Before flying home, I spoke to a group consisting mainly of assistant professors working on grant proposals. The talk was in the Texas Tech Teaching, Learning and Technology Center.
Having recently led an AuthorAID train-the-trainers workshop, I was especially interested to see on the walls of the lecture room some quotations about learning and teaching. Here, to end this week’s blog post, are some of these quotations:
Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Involve me and I understand. (Chinese Proverb)
The essence of learning is the ability to manage change by changing yourself. (A. de Geus)
What we learn with pleasure we never forget. (Louis Mercier)
Wishing you a pleasurable week— Barbara
