I am currently working on the environmental Bacillus species exhibiting biotechnological properties such as production of antimicrobial metabolites and the elucidation of the active compounds.

Biografía:

I have training in Medical and Pharmaceutical Microbiology, at undergraduate and postgraduate (MSc, Ph.D.) levels. I am currently a Chief Research Scientist with the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Nigeria with research and hands-on experience in the areas of STI in sexually active females, antimicrobial resistance, biotechnological properties of environmental Bacillus species. I have worked at different capacities in research projects such as; a research assistant in the FHI funded Clinical Trial of Cellulose Sulfate gel and HIV/STIs in Nigeria, Technologist in the AIDS Prevention Initiative in Nigeria (APIN) funded by PEPFAR, and presently, the laboratory lead/co-investigator in a Bill & Melinda Gates' Foundation's funded 'safety and antimicrobial resistance of mass administration of azithromycin in children 1-59 months in Nigeria'-SARMAAN project, where four (4) WHO's priority bacterial pathotypes (Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enterica ser Typhi, Escherichia coli) are isolated and monitored for antimicrobial (azithromycin) resistance. The project (SARMAAN) has been expanded to include ten (10) other states in the country due to the findings from the first study (SARMAAN I). I have worked on different bacterial and fungal pathogens, in terms of their isolation, molecular characterization, including the detection of their virulence genes. The latest being the isolation of certain non 'cereus' Bacillus species harbouring anthrax virulence genes in a largest abattoir in Lagos, Nigeria (Bamidele et al 2023). I have other grants/travel awards such as, the institutional (NIMR) intramural grant (senior category) to conduct research work on the anthrax Bacillus and human exposure, gut microbiome in non-severe cases of COVID-19 and apparently healthy individuals, funded by the COVID-19 Intervention Fund (NIMR), Wellcome Trust Advanced Course in Molecular Approaches to Clinical Microbiology in Africa (University of Cape Town, SA), Advanced Vaccinology Course, ADVAC funded by ALIVE, University of Witwatersrand, SA, WANETAM funded Proposal Writing Course (Horizon Europe), a) Fundamentals of Implementation Science, University of Washington, Postdoctoral Internship (Genomic Platform) at The MRC, The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. I have supervised students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and currently have over forty (40) scholarly publications in peer reviewed journal including authorship of a book chapter.
